Saw Metropolis (the 1927 Fritz Lang) tonight - the restored version with scenes found from the reel in Argentina. It was cool as hell, even if it aged a bit on the… humorous side :) I loved the look of the newly (2008) restored & added scenes like this one - in contrast with the rest of the movie, which was incredibly well-mastered in HD, these things were like little treasures, all covered in dirt. Jesus, I’m a weirdo.
It reminded me thematically, and at times visually of Kaiba. Particularly the whole Upper world/lower world thing, as well as just some overarching plot elements (boy from above meets girl from below, shit changes) If anything, Metropolis was a little more literal/allegorical (if that makes any sense) in its execution than Kaiba. it’s like they took the same common groups of elements (A, B, and C, let’s say), arranged them into two different patterns (BCA, CAB) and then looked at them through two different lenses. I’ll give the film a rewatch when I next rewatch Kaiba.
