I’m always surprised. Sometimes I think we encounter things years before we’re ready.

I first heard of Regina Spektor in 2007 or so, took a listen (being the indie cindy I was then) decided I didn’t like it. Moved on. Three (nearly four) years later, in 2010, I hear this song play at work. Being as I’m working though, I don’t have the time to sit down and remember the lyrics. Finally found a moment to remember one snatch of it for later googling (“It was so easy, and the words so sweet. You can’t remember, you try to move your feet.”) I had no idea that I’d ever run across Regina Spektor again. Everything I listen to her now is magical.

Naturally, this applies to people as well. A friend of mine, Oxana, in high school. When we were in high school, we barely talked to one another. I always thought she was fascinating in the way that she single-mindedly pursued painting. Years later, in university, when I was in an inbetween place, we encountered each other again. Though we rarely see each other; now she’s an irreplaceable person in my life. She’s always so… awol. Hmm.

Anyways, back to music.

More music I couldn’t appreciate when I first heard it, and now I love.

this song. Oh man. I heard it first when I was twelve and hated it and the video. I still don’t like the video too much, even though funny. I think the song has such beautiful lyrics that it deserves slightly more serious treatment, but the Foo Fighters always have kind of light hearted lyrics so..

Same story as above. I heard it first when I was in 3rd grade or so.

And so, friends, be sure you keep a catalog of all the things you run across. One day, you might be ready to appreciate them.
